Coping with extreme conditions takes real know how - Keep calm and carry on
Like the Inuits, our investment managers know how to survive and flourish in an adverse climate, finding shelter when it’s needed and making the most of any opportunities that present themselves.
At our latest investment presentations Tristan Hanson, Head of Asset allocation and Nick Skiming, Americas Equities specialist, discussed where to find value in this economic climate and the pitfalls of emotional investing. Afterwards, they gave more detailed responses to specific points made during the presentations.

Risk vs Reward - Balancing asset allocation in times of uncertainty
Amid a backdrop of volatile markets around the world, it is often difficult to know which assets to be invested in at any one time. Our minds can present us with obstacles to good judgement and, along with behavioural biases, our perceptions of risk may not be rational.
Taking this into account, our Head of Asset Allocation, Tristan Hanson, looks at where value lies in this economic climate and how to be in the right asset at the right time.

Challenging Perceptions – time to look from another perspective
The shifting perceptions of risk and opportunity
Conventional wisdom suggests equities are riskier than bonds. But it is very plausible that investors increasingly view blue-chip equities as fundamentally less risky than exposure to over-leveraged governments. Such thinking could trigger retail flows into developed market equities, and a re-rating of the asset class. Tristan Hanson examines this shifting perception of risk.
We entered 2010 faced with the potential of either cyclical recovery or some highly toxic scenarios. The potentially 'toxic scenarios' have not left us and 2011 will be littered with mutterings of a collapsing Portugal, Spain et al. Richard Robinson provides his thoughts on the outlook for European Equities in 2011.

The "double dip" debate
Recently, the pervading concern has become the risk of a "double dip" recession. Proponents of this view either argue that the stimulus-led recovery witnessed so far is unsustainable or that the risk of a negative shock or policy mistake are so high that recovery is likely doomed. Our investment strategist provides his thoughts and looks at how best to allocate assets at this juncture.

THE GLOBAL PLAYING FIELD
The World and South African in 2010s
We live in a world that is constantly evolving, and yet within this evolution, history seems intent on repeating itself. Our world has remained relatively predictable in one aspect for the last few centuries. The West has been the dominant force in global politics and economics. But the game has changed quite dramatically, with the emergence of new, and highly influential, players answering to different rules while tilting the global playing field their way.
Ashburton invites you to join us to examine the global game in the 2010s and the possible outcomes for South Africa and the rest of the world.
